How do I get an escort boat?

All paddlers must obtain their own escort boats. We do have access to boats. We will do our best to help our out of town racers secure a boat. In the past I have posted messages on fishing website to get boats. I will add the sites to the link page.

How much should an escort boat cost?

This is a tough question to answer. It depends on the boat size, gas prices, lodging. 300-500 is the general rule, Most skippers will sleep on their boats. The fee is to cover all their costs. Gas, mooring, food, lodging.

Where do we stay on the island?

There are a number of hotels, condos and houses to stay at. I always use Catalina Vacation rentals http://www.catalinavacations.com/ the Catalina web site is http://www.catalina.com There are other option here. My best recommendation is to get a house that sleeps 6-8 people. the costs come down and you have everything you need to cook your own meals.

Is their Camping in Avalon?

The simple answer is No. Their is a campsite 1.5 miles from the water outside avalon named Hermit Gultch. There is no camping at Desconso as we have during the nine man race.

Will there be someone that can transport boats from Northern California?

If we have enough canoes making the trip we wil try and arrange a trailer to transport the boats.

I am an out of state paddler, Can I rent or Borrow a canoe to race.

We cannot guarantee a boat for you, We will do our best to find you a canoe to rent or borrow. The more notice we have the better.

What happens if my escort boat doesn't show up or cancels?

Ocean Ohana and the race organisers are NOT responsible for your escort boats. We try and have extra escort boats lined up and will do what we can to help, But ultimatelly we are not responsible for your boat. No refunds or partial refunds for teams that have escort problems. Your escort boat is your responsibility.

What heppens if my escort boat breaks down during the race?

If your escort boat breaks down during the race notify the Lead safety boat so we can keep an eye on your paddler and or return him/her to your escort boat. In the event that you are unable to return to the race you must call vessel assist. Ocean Ohana and the race organisers are not responsible for your escort boat. There are NO refunds for teams that experiance escort problems before or duringthe race.

Can I arrive in Avalon the morning of the race?

Yes, However if you are planning on arriving the moring of the race you MUST be pre registered. Check in is at the base of the main pier between 8:30-9:30 am.

What happens if the weather is too rough to cross?

The race will go as planned, However if you or your captain decides the weather is too rough to cross, Or the conditions are beyond your capabilities, Your canoe can be reloaded into the container and shipped back to San Pedro. You will be charged an aditional fee for this. You may then wait for calmer weather and ride back with your escort boat or take the Flyer back to Dana.

Do I need to quality for the race?

There is no qualifier, however it is up to you to decide if you are capable of making the trip. In years past conditions have been generaly mild, However I have seen weather systems move into the area the days preceeding tha race. We have also added the three person team for less experianced paddlers to make the race less intimidating. This has become a very poular division.

Can I race Solo?

We do have a solo division, I strongly discourage this however, It is a relay race and we want to keep this as a main focus of the race. However we will allow solo paddlers, You will need to be pre approved, I do not want the end of the race held up for slow paddlers. Or have to worry about you. You still need to have your own escort boat. This division should ONLY be for top athletes.

What heppens if I get sick and can't race?

If you get sick and can't race, pleas elet us know as soon as possible. If you are not already on the island we may wish to use your escost boat. If you are on the island we also may need the escort boat. Also we can try and find a partner for your team mate. Race fees are non refundable.
